If you thought January of 2025 was scary, it has nothing on January of 2026. The U.S. struck Venezuela overnight and captured its long-serving President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, President Donald Trump said early Saturday morning after months of pressuring him over accusations of drug-running and illegitimacy in power.
President Donald Trump said Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife were “captured and flown out of the Country” early Saturday morning, confirming a “large scale strike” by the U.S. that drew quick condemnation and concern from across the globe. A photo shared on Donald Trumps ‘Truth Social Media’, appeared to show Maduro, and said the image showed the Venezuelan president “on board the USS Iwo Jima.” Maduro is allegedly being taken to New York, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi said Maduro and his wife would face charges after an indictment in New York where Bondi vowed in a social media post that the couple would “soon face the full wrath of American justice on American soil in American courts.”
The Senate will vote next week on a bipartisan war powers resolution to block President Trump from continuing military against Venezuela, a vote that takes on heightened importance because of the Presidents actions on Venezuela. The resolution to block the administration from engaging in further hostilities against Venezuela is privileged, which means Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) cannot stop it from coming to the floor.
In a statement shortly after the US bombings, Maduro’s government accused Washington of an “extremely serious military aggression”.
“Venezuela rejects, repudiates, and denounces before the international community the extremely serious military aggression perpetrated by the current government of the United States of America against Venezuelan territory and people,”
