Karmelo Anthony, at 19 years old was sentenced to 35 years in prison following being found guilty of murder in the stabbing death of Austin Metcalf, 17, at a stadium in the Dallas suburb of Frisco. Following his conviction, Karmelo Anthony initially requested a court-appointed lawyer (attorneys Donny Perales and Lara Bracamonte Davila) for the appeal. However, his family has since retained a new, high-profile private legal team led by appellate attorney Russell Wilson II, civil rights lawyer Brooke Cluse (Ben Crump Law), and Texas NAACP President Gary Bledsoe to handle the appeal. It’s now being reported that Karmelo Anthony’s legal dream team has scored their first big win.
Karmelo Anthony’s legal team won its bid to have State District Judge John Roach Jr. removed from his murder appeal. The ruling came Wednesday (Aug. 19) from visiting Judge Sid Harle of San Antonio’s Fourth Administrative Judicial Region, who had been assigned specifically to hear the recusal motion. A new judge will also preside over Thursday’s separate hearing, where Anthony’s attorneys are expected to argue for an entirely new trial. The recusal push came from a newly assembled, pro bono legal team of civil rights and criminal defense attorneys who took over Anthony’s appeal in June, arguing there were strong grounds to challenge how the trial had been handled.
