Ex-Louisville Cop Found Guilty of Violating Breonna Taylor’s Rights

26 year old African-American emergency medical technician, Breonna Taylor of Lousiville, KY, was at home in her bed sleeping on March 13, 2020 when 3 plainclothes Louisville Police burst into her home without stating who they were, when gun fire erupted, police then shot Breonna Taylor at least eight times killing her.  The world has been saying her name ever since.

Four years later a Federal jury convicted a former Kentucky police detective, Brett Hankison, of using excessive force on Breonna Taylor and depriving her of her civil rights.

According to Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division:

“We hope the jury’s verdict recognizing this violation of Ms. Taylor’s civil and constitutional rights brings some small measure of comfort to her family and loved ones who have suffered so deeply from the tragic events of March 2020,”

Neither of the officers who shot Breonna Taylor, former Sgt. John Mattingly and former Detective Myles Cosgrove, have been charged in her death. Brett Hankison who is scheduled to be sentenced on March 12, 2025, faces a maximum of life in prison.
