President Donald Trump has repeatedly promised to “Make America Great Again” and “make America affordable again.” However those who are in need the most, don’t seem to be part of Trump’s American dream. In its request for the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the White House called the current system of federal rental assistance “dysfunctional” and proposed essentially ending Section 8 and other housing voucher programs.
President Donald Trump’s first budget plan since returning to office, includes a $26.7 billion cut to Section 8 and other housing programs. That’s a 43 percent drop in funding. If Congress says yes, the federal government would step back, and states would take over more control. New rules would also limit how long some can stay in the program. Adults with no disabilities would only get help for two years. Experts warn the plan could lead to more homelessness, packed shelters, and more people struggling just to stay off the streets.
