The debate of defunding the police has been a smoking hot topic after the horrific year of 2020 when we were trying to survive the COVID-19 pandemic, thanks to cell phones, police brutality was brought to the masses in real time when Derek Chauvin an ex Minneapolis police officer murdered George Floyd. Ever since that date it seems like everyday a video goes viral of police over stepping their bounds because they wear a blue uniform although the moniker of to protect and serve has gotten convoluted.
Hence this story that brings us to Florida where the Eustis Police Department is under fire because two of their white officers tased an autistic black man.
Bodycam video has been released from the incident where the officers responded to a 911 call saying they thought someone was trying to break into their house, according to the caller a man they didn’t know approached their home. When police arrived they observed Louis Grahai who has the “mental capacity of a 4-year-old.” who is unable to speak and wears diapers, walking around. Police ordered Louis Grahai to get on the ground and when he didn’t obey they tased him. While on the ground they ordered him to put his hands behind his back and when he didn’t respond they tased him again. Louis Grahai family rushed to the seen to find the officers pinning him to the ground while his ear was bleeding, and required hospital medical attention for his injuries.
The response for the incident from the Eutis Police Department:
“De-escalation was used here, based on the knowledge [officers] had at the time,” “Had [they] known this was a severely autistic person, I doubt any force would have been used. I think they did everything right. It could have been a lot worse—thank God it wasn’t.”
