Karmelo Anthony, at 19 years old was sentenced to 35 years in prison following being found guilty of murder by an all white jury in the stabbing death of Austin Metcalf, 17, at a stadium in the Dallas suburb of Frisco. While there has been a public outcry that Karmelo Anthony was served an injustice because of race. The father of Austin Metcalf is speaking for the first time, saying that the verdict brought him peace, that he never thought it was about race and he felt that Karmelo Anthony should have gotten a life sentence.
Speaking with CBS News Texas, Jeff Metcalf said Anthony’s guilty verdict came as a relief:
“When I woke up this morning, it was a very different feeling, When I woke up, I felt like one million pounds had been lifted off my shoulders and this morning was the first day I woke up with a feeling of peace, comfort. Tranquility that I haven’t experienced in 14 months.”
He went on to say that his son had no racist motives:
“This case was never about race. There are going to be those people now who just try to throw shade on the whole trial with the jury makeup and the speed of it and that sort of thing. Those are the same people that said he was jumped by four people… you’re going to spin whatever story to try to keep yourself afloat.”
Metcalf also said he believes Anthony should have received a life sentence and claims he will oppose parole:
“If I’m still alive, yes, I will be there in person. If not, I am going to make a video. If I’m passed on, that can be played.”
Karmelo Anthony was indicted by a Collin County grand jury after prosecutors presented evidence related to the fatal confrontation that unfolded during a track meet at Frisco’s Kuykendall Stadium on April 2, 2025. Allegedly a 17 year old Karmelo Anthony warned 17 year old Austin Metcalf, “Touch me and see what happens,” Austin Metcalf was stabbed in the chest and later died from his injuries. That’s fact.
