Karmelo Anthony First-Degree Murder Trial With An All White Jury Has Began[VIDEO]

Karmelo Anthony was indicted by a Collin County grand jury after prosecutors presented evidence related to the fatal confrontation that unfolded during a track meet at Frisco’s Kuykendall Stadium on April 2, 2025.  Reportedly an argument happened during a weather delay inside the team tent.  Allegedly a 17 year old Karmelo Anthony warned 17 year old Austin Metcalf, “Touch me and see what happens,”  Austin Metcalf was stabbed in the chest and later died from his injuries.  That’s fact.  Karmelo Anthony say’s the stabbing was in self defense, while the prosecution argues Anthony carried out an unprovoked “sneak attack” with a pocketknife.  Karmelo Anthony was an A student and team captain.

The trial has drawn heavy public scrutiny due to underlying racial tensions. The finalized 12-person jury contains no Black members. State District Judge John Roach Jr. denied a defense “Batson challenge” after prosecutors struck three Black female educators. The state successfully argued they excluded them because the crime took place at a school-sponsored athletic function, not because of their race. During jury selection, Anthony’s defense objected after prosecutors struck three Black female potential jurors, arguing they were similarly situated to a white female juror who was not removed. Prosecutors responded that the women were struck because they were educators, not because of their race, explaining that the case centers around an incident involving school aged children at a school event. The judge agreed with the prosecution and allowed the strikes.

Meanwhile on day one of the trial supporters of Karmelo Anthony and Austin Metcalf squared off near the courthouse entrance, shouting at one another as crowds gathered for the opening day of testimony. Collin County sheriff’s deputies remained nearby and monitored the situation as the groups exchanged heated words.
