Atatiana Jefferson Family Awarded $11.25mil After Being Fatally Shot By Fort Worth Police 7 Years Ago [VIDEO]

Atatiana Jefferson was shot and killed by a Fort Worth, Texas police officer when a neighbor called police because her front door was open.  Police arrived at the scene and fired a shot, without identifying themselves, killing Ataiana who was standing inside the home. Atatiana Jefferson’s father 58 year old Marquis Jefferson, passed away from what some say was a broken heart  just weeks after Atatiana Jefferson was killed.  Jefferson’s mother Yolanda Carr, was found dead in the home that her daughter Atatiana was killed in not long after that.  Now 7 years later the family of Atatiana Jefferson has been awarded $11.25 million.

The Fort Worth City Council unanimously approved an $11.25 million settlement with Jefferson’s estate. Atatiana was just 28 years old when former officer Aaron Dean shot her through a window in October 2019 after police were called to her home for a welfare check because a neighbor noticed a door was open. At the time, she had been playing video games with her 8-year-old nephew, Zion. Aaron Dean was later convicted of manslaughter in 2022 and sentenced to 11 years, 10 months and 12 days in prison.

Under the proposed agreement, Atatiana Jefferson’s two minor nephews will receive their portions in a trust when they turn 18, and additional shares will be divided among other surviving family members. After the city council’s approval, the agreement will be sent to the probate court to be finalized.
