Shonda Rhimes and producing partner Betsy Beers have been streaming with a partnership with Netflix since 2017. Netflix has renewed it’s overall deal to keep Shondaland’s film and TV projects exclusive to Netflix while expanding into gaming, merchandise and live events tied to its intellectual property. The agreement also continues Netflix’s backing of Shondaland’s Ladder Program, which trains underrepresented below-the-line creatives.
Shondaland’s biggest show to date on Netflix is “Bridgerton,” which recently aired its fourth season and has already been renewed for a fifth. It is one of the most popular show’s in Netflix history, with Seasons 1 and 3 ranking in the Top 10 Netflix shows of all time with 113.3 million views and 106 million views respectively. Per Netflix, Season 4 pulled in over 100 million views, while the streamer also previously aired the popular prequel series “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.”
Shonda Rhimes at the age of 56 is an award-winning producer, screenwriter, author, and CEO of the global media company Shondaland. She’s best known for creating hit TV series like Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and How to Get Away with Murder. Rhimes is the first woman to create three television dramas that surpassed 100 episodes. She also created the Grey’s Anatomy spin-off Private Practice.
Shonda Rhimes left ABC for a landmark multi-year deal with Netflix after feeling creatively restricted by broadcast constraints and undervalued following a minor dispute over a Disneyland executive pass perk. Seems like Shonda Rhimes could show them better then she could tell them.
