A new doll that is trending on social media is currently sparking global outrage. This latest controversy centers on China’s “Natasha” doll which is an elastic, rubbery toy originally marketed for “stress relief”, but is stressing people out because of the perceived racist physical degradation being shared online.
Manufacturers of the “Natasha” doll offer the doll in multiple skin tones, viral videos across Chinese platforms like Xiaohongshu and Douyin reveal a troubling trend… for some reason, users are overwhelmingly selecting the dark-skinned, Black version of the doll to stretch, stomp, smash with hammers, and even boil the doll, claiming it’s just comedy and entertainment.
For District-area psychiatrist Dr. Allan Cofield, the toy represents something far more troubling than an internet fad.
“The Black female, to go along with Malcolm X, has always been the most disrespected and unprotected person in the world and they have been a punching bag for white folks, obviously the Chinese, and unfortunately sometimes Black men,” Cofield told The Informer. “This doll carries that tradition and there’s no merchant who should be willing to carry this obscene and racist toy that satisfies the violent and hateful instincts of those who are seeking to buy such object.”
