North Carolina HS Track Team Striped Of State Championship For Alleged Early Celebration [VIDEO]

North Carolina’s Mallard Creek High School boys track team was stripped of its state championship following a controversial disqualification during the final race of the meet.

According to reports, Mallard Creek secured the NCHSAA state title after winning the boys 4×400 meter race. Runner Nyan Brown crossed the line first and raised his hand to celebrate finishing the race. Officials reportedly ruled the action as “unsportsmanlike conduct” and disqualified the entire relay team.  Nyan Brown had earlier in the meet broken the state meet record in the 300-meter hurdles and where he allegedly received a warning.

Had the runner not been assessed the unsportsmanlike conduct after winning the 4×400 relay race, the Mavericks would have been crowned state champions. Instead, the boys team was denied winning the state title, finishing second overall.

NCHSAA commissioner Que Tucker released a statement,

“Judgment decisions made by meet officials are done with the full knowledge of NFHS Track & Field Rules as well as rules and expectations of the NCHSAA relative to unsporting behavior and actions,” …“We recognize there is deep disappointment experienced by the student-athletes, coaches, and the school community involved.”

According to Mallard Creek Head Track Coach Sam Willoughby, Nyan Brown was “never warned,” earlier in the meet.

“When they warn an athlete, they call the coach in and say, ‘If it happens again, he’s disqualified,’” … “He was never warned. He was never given a personal message saying, ‘Don’t do this again.’”

According to reports, Mallard Creek has officially filed an appeal with the Interscholastic Athletic Appeals Board in hopes of overturning the ruling. They’re asking to either have the disqualification reversed or be named co-state champions alongside Jordan High School.
