School is the one place that parents believe is a safe space for their children to learn and grow. Sadly we hear reported too many times about bullying, teacher/student fights and school shootings. Recently in Parma, OH a student brought a gun into the school and fatally shot herself in a cafeteria in front of other students. Now parents as well as student, who have been out of school for a couple days, are severely traumatized and concerned about their the safety in the school with some students saying that the young lady that shot herself had been complaining about bullying.
At at Valley Forge High School in Parma Heights, Ohio a suburb of Cleveland, police said the 18 year old student used a firearm belonging to a family member died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside the school’s cafeteria on Monday afternoon, with no threat to students or staff.
A public forum for the Parma community was held to share concerns about safety in the school, where metal detectors and mental health support were among the most frequently raised issues. Students also spoke about fear and a desire to feel safe at school. “I do not feel safe in school anymore. School is a place of learning, not fear.” Another person said, “Kids get bullied day in and day out,” (in which another student said that the bullying doesn’t get addressed), “It is 2026, and the reality students face today is completely different from what adults experience when they went to school.”
“Physical fights get you 10 days out of school. No one has died from a fight, but someone has died from bullying. We need take that weight of physical fights and 10 days out of school and consider something very similar to verbal bullying,” – student Patrick Lloyd.
