Indiana’s thrilling 27-21 victory over the University of Miami was every parents dream of watching their child go from the ranks of little league to the biggest stage in college sports. Fernando Mendoza had an incredible season as the quarterback for Indiana by becoming the newest member of the Heisman Fraternity, becoming just the 18th person to win the award and a national title in the same season after leading Indiana to a 27-21 win over Miami. Mendoza that is almost a shoe in to become the number one pick in this years NFL draft, has a testimony of inspiration, his mother, who has been battling Multiple Sclerosis for 15 years and a father that sits in celebration for him in support for his mother.
In an interview with ESPN, Fernando Mendoza’s father, who shares his namesake, never stands during games. The reason for this is that Mendoza’s mother, Elsa, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis 15 years ago.
“Yeah, it’s for sure a conscious effort,” Mendoza said when asked if his dad purposely doesn’t stand to support his mother. “I can get a little emotional right now, but it means a lot to him. Him always staying by my mom’s side. My mom has taught me so much, my father’s taught me so much about love as well. Everybody has their why and my mom is my why.”
Fernando Mendoza’s parents described the moment as “fantastic” and “unbelievable,” celebrating their Miami-grown son’s Heisman Trophy and national championship win on the same field where he grew up watching football.
Now that’s love.
