Mental health issues are real and unfortunately many Americans suffer from them at times resulting in tragedy. Prayers are in order as it is being reported that Former NFL Cincinnati Bengals star running back Rudi Johnson has passed away at the age of 45.
TMZ reported that according to authorities Rudi Johnson died by suicide in Florida just after midnight on Tuesday. Reportedly Rudi Johnson had been recently struggling with mental health issues and the possible effects of CTE that he could not overcome.
CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy) is a progressive, degenerative brain disease caused by repetitive head impacts and concussions, which often lead to symptoms like memory loss, mood changes, and impaired thinking years after the injuries occur.
Many other NFL players have had or been diagnosed with CTE, a degenerative brain disease linked to repetitive head impacts, with a Boston University study finding it in 92% of 376 deceased NFL players. Notable players like Junior Seau, Aaron Hernandez, Chris Henry, and Vincent Jackson were diagnosed with CTE, which can only be confirmed post-mortem through a brain autopsy, researchers are working to identify in-life diagnostic tests and treatments.
Rudi Johnson, who earned the nickname of the “Auburn Rambler” was a fourth-round pick by Cincinnati in the 2001 NFL Draft and played eight NFL seasons. Over his eight year NFL career, Rudi Johnson notched 5,979 yards rushing and 49 touchdowns, much of that production coming his first seven years with the Bengals. Rudi Johnson rushed for over 1,000 yards three times, including a career-best 1,458-yard, 12-touchdown effort as one of the league’s top ballcarriers in 2005. Rudi Johnson signed with the Detroit Lions in his final professional season in 2008 season where he rushed for 237 yards and scored twice before stepping away from football.
