Prayers are in order as sad news is being reported. The mother of the late Grammy Award winning, singing great Whitney Houston, Cissy Houston, has passed away at the age of 91.
Reportedly Cissy Houston’s daughter-in-law Pat Houston told The Associated Press in a statement that the Grammy Award winning gospel singer, Cissy Houston passed away Monday morning in her New Jersey home while under hospice care for Alzheimer’s disease, surrounded by her family.
“Our hearts are filled with pain and sadness. We loss the matriarch of our family,” “Mother Cissy has been a strong and towering figure in our lives. A woman of deep faith and conviction, who cared greatly about family, ministry, and community. Her more than seven-decade career in music and entertainment will remain at the forefront of our hearts.”
Cissy Houston was the mother of singer and actress Whitney Houston, the aunt of singers Dionne Warwick and Dee Dee Warwick, and a cousin of opera singer Leontyne Price. Cissy Houston after a successful career singing backup for such artists as Roy Hamilton, Dionne Warwick, Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin, and Chaka Khan, Houston embarked on a solo career, winning two Grammy Awards for her work.
Cissy Houston had three children. Her first child, a son named Gary Garland, was from her first marriage. She then had two more children during her second marriage, her only daughter and the late Whitney Houston and her second son Michael Houston.
