The wave of the future might sound cool, but these self driving cars as smart as they are may be a little dumb, or are they like us scared? A self-driving Waymo taxi was captured on video blocking emergency vehicles from responding to the scene of a packed bar in downtown Austin just two minutes away from where a gunman killed two people and wounded 14 others at Buford’s Backyard Beer Garden. The poor Waymo car looked so confused.
Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company and subsidiary of Alphabet Inc. (Google’s parent company) that operates fully driverless, electric robotaxi services. Known as Waymo One, it offers 24/7 public ride-hailing in cities like Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Austin, and Houston, using vehicles equipped with lidar, cameras, and radar.
According to the person that allegedly ordered the Waymo car:
“We left a club at 2 a.m. and were walking to get a ride home. We just so happened to get a Waymo car from Uber, and when we found the car, it was trying to pick us up but got stuck in the middle of the street and blocked emergency vehicles for a couple of minutes,”
According to the robotaxi company, the vehicle was approaching its pickup spot. After it encountered emergency personnel, it immediately began making a U-turn to clear the way, and a nearby officer assisted.
The FBI is investigating the shooting in a downtown bar district in Austin, TX as a potential act of terrorism.
