Prayers are in order as it is being reported that the Godmother of the late Tupac Shakur and Black Panther member/activist, Assata Shakur, has passed away at the age of 78. According to one report Assata Shakur “died in Havana, Cuba, as a result of health conditions and her advanced age.
Assata Olugbala Shakur was born JoAnne Deborah Bryon on July 16, 1947 in New York City, New York. Assata Shakur was Tupac Shakur’s godmother/step-aunt and a revolutionary political activist, a member of the Black Panther Party and the Black Liberation Army, who was a fugitive living in exile in Cuba. Assata Shakur was living in exile because, after escaping a maximum-security prison in 1979, she feared for her life and believed she would not receive justice in the U.S. legal system, which she described as racist. She sought and was granted political asylum in Cuba in 1984, where she has lived as a political refugee ever since.
Tupac described his relationship with her in his song “Words of Wisdom,” referring to her as a fugitive and a symbol for the people.
