In 2020 the world turned upside down while social distancing from the pandemic was in place, not because of the lives that were being lost from COVID-19 but because of deaths that were going viral of African American at the hands of those that are paid to protect and serve. 6 year ago today this Memorial Day a shocking video went viral of a Minneapolis police officer arresting a man when the officer was scene kneeling on the mans neck in front of witnesses, with the man telling them that he couldn’t breath. Witnesses posted the horrifying scene on social media. The man originally was reported to have died later at the hospital, with no name or information being given other than he seemed to be medically distressed. That man was later identified as George Floyd.
Six years after his murder, George Floyd’s family continues to fight to keep his legacy and call for reform. Ahead of honoring George at a Houston Memorial Day gathering, his niece Bianca Williams told PEOPLE, “He was more than a headline.” The 32-year-old added, “He was family. He was deeply loved. His life mattered long before the world knew his name.” George’s older sister, LaTonya Floyd, 57, also spoke out. She too remains determined to keep her little brother’s memory alive — despite facing serious health problems. In the past year, she’s had two strokes and a brain aneurysm.
