There has been much talk about young ladies with college basketball careers graduating and some being drafted without enough room for them to play professionally in the United States. So women have to basically play overseas in order to get paid for their profession. The WNBA have heard everyones cries and have officially announced three more expansion teams and one of those teams will be in Cleveland, OH.
WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert announced that, over the next five years, the league will expand to 18 teams, with Cleveland, Detroit and Philadelphia set to join by 2030.
“The demand for women’s basketball has never been higher, and we are thrilled to welcome Cleveland (2028), Detroit (2029), and Philadelphia (2030) to the WNBA family. This historic expansion is a powerful reflection of our league’s extraordinary momentum, the depth of talent across the game, and the surging demand for investment in women’s professional basketball.” -Cathy Engelbert
This will be Cleveland and Detroit’s 2nd rodeo with a WNBA team that will play at there NBA teams arenas while Philadelphia is planning on building a brand new facility.
The Cleveland Rockers became one of eight WNBA charter organizations in 1996 and played the first of their seven seasons in 1997. The team folded in 2003. Back then, former Cavs and Rockers owner Gordon Gund blamed the demise of Cleveland’s WNBA club on low attendance and a failure to turn a profit in any season of its existence.
