SZA Not Feelin It “The Only Reason I’m defined As An R&B Artist Is Because I’m Black”

Music is the only artform that seems to get slammed into boxes.  You have, Country, R&B, Hip Hop, Rock, Jazz etc. etc., genres.  Then you have the artists that get locked into labels such as Country, Blues, Gospel etc. etc. singer and lets not forget the Neo-Soul singer label that blocked many singers from garnering national attention.  Recently national recording artist singer SZA opened up about her feelings about being labeled a R&B artist and why she isn’t feeling it.

In a recent interview SZA had this to say:

“The only reason I’m defined as an R&B artist is because I’m Black,”  “It’s almost a little reductive because it doesn’t allow space to be anything else or try anything else.”  “I simply just want to be allowed the same opportunity to make whatever I want without a label, [without it being] based on the color of my skin, or the crew that I run with, or the beats that I choose,”

You are hearing more and more about not only artists music crossing over but now with artist such as K. Michelle, who say’s she won’t record another R&B album, has now turned to country followed up by Beyonce’.
