Southern University Student Dies After Taking Part In A Fraternity Ritual

Prayers are in order as a Southern University student, 20 year old Caleb Wilson, died following an of campus fraternity ritual.  A death that has sparked much social media debate over hazing rituals in become members of the Divine Nine.

The Divine Nine is the nickname for the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), a group of nine historically African American sororities and fraternities.

NOLA native Caleb Wilson a mechanical engineering junior at Southern University in Louisiana on Thursday was pronounced dead after being taken to Baton Rouge General Hospital.  Caleb Wilson had been taking part in a ritual with members of Omega Psi Phi at North Sherwood Forest Community Park, where allegedly Caleb Wilson had been standing in a line as part of the initiation process when Wilson reportedly collapsed. An autopsy is being performed to determine Caleb Wilson’s cause of death.

“An off-campus incident is believed to have contributed to Caleb’s death. Southern University is cooperating fully with the Baton Rouge Police Department, which is leading the investigation. At this time, no further details are available,” – a letter from Chancellor John K. Pierre

The family of Caleb Wilson who was also a member of the Southern University “Human Jukebox” Marching Band released a statement.

On behalf of the Wilson family, we want to express our deepest gratitude to everyone who has offered their love, support, and prayers during this incredibly difficult time…..We are committed to seeking the truth about the circumstances surrounding Caleb’s passing and ensuring that no other family has to endure such a tragedy…..As we navigate this painful journey, we ask for your continued prayers and respect for our privacy.  [read complete statement here]

Omega Psi Phi has put out a statement saying they’re in full support of the authorities’ investigation and are willing to assist.

A debate has sparked on social media calling out the culture of “hazing” and rituals for participation in Greek life, with Divine Nine members defending the fraternities and stating that participating in illegal hazing is a “choice”.
