In December 43 year old Robert Brooks had been serving a 12-year prison sentence for first-degree assault, only hours after being transferred from another nearby facility, Brooks was beaten to death by prison guards while handcuffed and the vicious ordeal was caught on body cameras. After a public outcrying it seems that justice might be starting to turn in regards to the death of Robert Brooks as 6 of the New York prison guards involved have been charged with murder.
In 2017, Robert Brooks pled guilty to first-degree assault, a felony and was serving a 12-year sentence after he was convicted of first-degree assault in 2017 for stabbing his girlfriend multiple times during a physical domestic dispute.
The now former six New York prison guards, Nicholas Anzalone, David Kingsley, Anthony Farina, Christopher Walrath and Matthew Galliher were among the people charged with second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter, while two of them were additionally charged with gang assault., in the death of Robert Brooks, according to court documents. The name of the sixth person charged was redacted, so it’s unclear whether they were a guard.
Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the charges Thursday, adding that New York State Police would be deployed to make arrests.
“Robert Brooks should be alive today,” “The brutal attack on Mr. Brooks was sickening, and I immediately moved to terminate the employment of those involved.”
Shocking video, taken from four jail guards, showing Robert Brooks, handcuffed, being beaten unconscious by prison guards before he’s stripped down to his underwear. Robert Brooks was eventually taken to Wynn Hospital in Utica and declared dead from “asphyxia due to compression of the neck.”
