Protests In Philly Erupt After Police Kill 27 Year Old Man With A Knife [VIDEO]

91 people were arrested overnight after looting and vandalism ravaged parts of West Philly when protests erupted after Philadelphia Police shot and killed 27 year old Walter Wallace Jr. because he was holding a knife that they ordered him to drop.

Here’s what we know.

Police arrived on the scene Monday afternoon.  Walter Wallace Jr. started walking towards police officers who are pointing their guns at him. Wallace’s mother was trying to hold him back in an to try and defuse the situation to no avail when two officers opened fire, striking Wallace 10 times.

After watching bodycam video of the incident Mayor Jim Kenney had this to say:

“I have watched the video of this tragic incident and it presents difficult questions that must be answered.” 

However the Fraternal Order of Police defending the officers saying that they did nothing wrong according to PPD use-of-force protocol.

According to the family of Walter Wallace Jr. he had bipolar disorder, the family called for an ambulance to come to the home because Wallace was having a mental health crisis, but instead of an ambulance the police showed up.

According to the families Attorney Shaka Johnson

“My position should be clear. That was an unjustified shooting,” “We have a person who has mental health issues, we’re going to vet those out as the process continues. But we have officers who I think are not properly trained to deal with those mental health issues.”
