The story of the week being honest is the winter storm that stretched from southern to northern states leaving many struggling to navigate unfamiliar large amounts of snow and icy conditions because of the record breaking cold, causing school and business losings through the effected states. Sadly for a mother of six that was hunkering down, three of her children lost their lives playing on a frozen pond during the winter storm.
Cheyenne Hangaman of Texas, said her family had been staying at a friend’s house across the street from the pond. She said she warned her children not to go near the water. Her three sons , EJ (9), Kaleb (8), and Howard (6), were playing near the water anyway, when her youngest daughter ran to her and told her that her brothers were in the pond. Hangaman said she rushed outside and ran across as much ice as she could to try and save her children one by one before falling into the freezing water herself. Hangaman said the cold shocked her body immediately and made it hard to move.
“ I would grab one, try to put him on ice, but the ice just kept breaking,” … “I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t move. By that time I knew that my kids were already gone. So I just had to try to fight for my life at that point,”
First responders and a neighbor later threw a rope to Hangaman to pull her out while pulling the two older boys from the water. The youngest child was recovered after an extensive search of the pond.
“How do you go from having six kids to three? I don’t know how you do that. I guess I gotta figure it out,” “We were actually just supposed to be sledding in a cardboard box somewhere, but that didn’t happen.”
