This is every journalist worst nightmare to have to cover news that unfolds right in front of your eyes that tragically involves your very own co-workers.
Prayers are in order as NBC Los Angeles news journalist Eliana Moreno and pilot George Marciniw were among three people killed Tuesday when the helicopter they were in crashed as they provided coverage for NBCLA and Telemundo 52 in the Los Angeles community of Chatsworth.
Eliana Moreno best known as “Eli in the heli” on Instagram, was the voice in the sky for NBCLA and Telemundo 52, providing coverage of Los Angeles pursuits, wildfires, other breaking news and “beauty shots” of the dramatic Southern California landscape. Moreno’s news partner in flight George Marciniw is believed to have had more than 30 years of flight experience.
Moreno and Marciniw were hovering near the site of a fatal crash involving a Metro bus to cover the story when the chopper they were in according to a witness appeared to be swaying before it lost altitude and crashed in a business’ parking lot. A third person killed on the ground was identified Wednesday by the coroner’s office as 29-year-old Edy Gutierrez Mejia. It’s unclear what caused the crash.
