Prayers are in order as sad news has been reported that Grammy Award winning singer, Roberta Flack, best known for hit ‘Killing Me Softly’ has passed away at the age of 88.
Roberta Flack had announced back in 2022 she had ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, and could no longer sing. Roberta Flack’s publicist Elaine Schock said in a statement, that the singing/songwriting great died at home surrounded by her family.
Robert Flack along with frequent collaborator the legendary singer/musician/song writer, Donny Hathaway (father of Grammy Award winning singer song writer Lalah Hathaway), whom she met when they were students at Howard University in Washington D.C., Flack was a regular chart presence in the ’70s. Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway released two albums together with songs that you can still hear on airwaves today: “Roberta Flack & Donny Hathaway” in 1972 and “Robert Flack Featuring Donny Hathaway” in 1980, that included Carole King’s “You’ve Got a Friend” and The Righteous Brothers’ “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling,” as well as “Where Is the Love” and “The Closer I Get to You.”
Roberta Flack that always fought against being placed in a musical genre box in her lifetime, secured 14 Grammy nominations and won five, including a lifetime achievement award in 2020 and back-to-back Record of the Year wins. Roberta Flacks timeless smash hit ‘Killing Me Softly’ earned Roberta Flack Grammys in 1974 for record of the year and best female pop vocal performance, also landed the Fugees a Grammy in 1997 for best R&B performance by a duo or group with vocal.
Lets keep the family, friends and colleagues of the great Roberta Flack uplifted in our prayers.
