We send our children to school with the intent that they are in a safe space. Unfortunately it seems like you hear about guns in schools as well as school shootings way too much these days. Reportedly an 11 year old Michigan boy has been expelled for, what he thought was the right thing to do, disarming and disassembling a classmates gun.
According to his mother, Savitra McClurkin of Lansing, Michigan, “I’m frustrated. I’m at my wits end. I don’t know what to do,” after her 11-year-old son was expelled from Dwight Rich School of the Arts back in May after his classmate brought a gun to campus and is now doing everything she can to get her son back in school.
According to Savitra McClurkin her son had seen his classmate with a gun and used his hunting knowledge to safely handle the weapon and remove the bullets, then throw the bullets away. When school officials found out instead of rewarding him for being a hero for him disarming and disassembling a classmates gun, the school expelled him for possessing a weapon on school grounds, citing Michigan law.
The 11 year old A/B student who honestly believed he was doing the right thing, didn’t tell the school what had did because:
“He didn’t want to implicate himself in it, nor did he want to tell on the person that actually brought the firearm,” “Because he knows firearms aren’t supposed to be in school.”
In a statement provided to PEOPLE, Lansing School District Director of Public Safety Dale Person and Executive Director of School Culture Cordelia Black said: “Expulsion is never a decision the district takes lightly. It is always considered a last resort. However, Michigan law provides very clear direction in cases involving dangerous weapons. The investigation — which included statements and video evidence — left no ambiguity and required this outcome.”
