We heard all about Kendrick Lamar’s Phenomenal Super Bowl Halftime show, however there is a performance that some may have missed, that is important to highlight in this strange era of elimination of DEI during Black History Month. Clearly The NFL is still onboard with DEI, as prior to K Dot’s performance, John Batiste singing of the ‘National Anthem’ and Trombone Shorty and Lauren Daigle jazzy rendition of ‘America The Beautiful’, singer Ledisi slayed The Black National Anthem!!
The R&B singer, Ledisi, took us to church while standing on a platform in a billowing white dress, backed by a choir of 125 New Orleans high school students in yellow robes to celebrate the song’s 125th anniversary. She represented for her hometown with her performance of the Black national anthem, originally penned by James Weldon Johnson with music by his brother John Rosamund. The song reflects the ongoing struggle for racial equality and imagines a liberated future for Black Americans.
