Largest Antebellum Plantation Home In U.S. Built By Slaves, Destroyed By Fire [VIDEO]

The Nottoway Plantation, located in White Castle, Louisiana, was the largest remaining antebellum mansion in the Southern United States, built in 1859 by slaves.  Almost sounding Biblical The Nottoway Planation has reportedly been destroyed by fire.

According to media outlets, staff noticed smoke after entering the home’s museum room around 2pm on May 15th.  After they left and quickly returned, they began to see flames. WAF9 reports that the initial fire began in a bedroom located on the second floor of the home.  The building’s north wing and a large part of its back wall had collapsed by Thursday evening.  Nearly a dozen firemen responded to put out flames at the 53,000-square-foot property.

No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation by local fire officials and the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
