Kansas City Chiefs Offensive Coordinator, Eric Bieniemy, Son Arrested And Charged For Shooting His Mother

Sunday night Kansas City Chiefs Offensive Coordinator, Eric Bieniemy, wife 57 year old Mia Bieniemy was hospitalized in stable condition after being shot at the family’s home in Ashburn, Virginia.  Reported their son 27 year old  Elijah Zion Bieniemy has been arrested and charged for shooting his mother Mia Bieniemy.

Reportedly deputies responded to a shooting call at the residence of Eric Bieniemy, and sources said Mia was struck in the chest and arm.  Local police confirmed a woman was being treated for serious gunshot injuries but didn’t release her name. Elijah was arrested and charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharging a firearm inside a dwelling, and is being held without bond.

Eric Bieniemy, who recently returned as the Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive coordinator, was with the team at training camp in Missouri before the incident.   The Chiefs released a statement saying:

“The club is aware of the incident involving Eric Bieniemy’s family. Out of respect for their privacy, we won’t have a comment at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.” 

Eric Bieniemy was Colorado’s offensive coordinator for two seasons prior to joining the Kansas City Chiefs as running backs coach in 2013. He was credited in the development of Jamaal Charles and Kareem Hunt, with the latter leading the NFL in rushing yards as a rookie in 2017. He was promoted to offensive coordinator under head coach Andy Reid in 2018, winning Super Bowl LIV and Super Bowl LVII with the Chiefs. Bieniemy also served as the Washington Commanders assistant head coach and offensive coordinator in 2023 and the offensive coordinator for the UCLA Bruins in 2024 before joining the Bears as their running backs coach in 2025. In 2026, the Chiefs brought back Bieniemy to be their offensive coordinator again under head coach Andy Reid.
