Professional Tennis as an organization has always regarded themselves as nothing but class holding all that grace their courts to high standards while on display playing before some of the richest people in the world. Professional tennis for women of color had been a serious tough nut to crack into being honest because of these alleged high standards. So what happens when a woman of color beats an opponent that is not so colorful, however, in defeat decides to disrespect and threaten you? Inquiring minds want to know after Jelena Ostapenko publicly disrespected and threatened Taylor Townsend following being defeated at the US Open.
Taylor Townsend defeated Jelena Ostapenko 7-5, 6-1 in the second round of the U.S. Open on Wednesday. When Taylor and Ostapenko met the net to shake hand following the match Taylor Townsend was met with Ostapenko telling she needed to apologize to her for a shot that clipped the top of the net but stayed in play. Townsend who said she didn’t have nothing to apologize for was then told by a heated Ostapenko that Townsend had no class, no education, and to see what happens when we get outside the U.S. Townsends ending response was that Ostapenko needs learn how to take a loss better.
If the situation had been reversed where Taylor Townsend had publicly disrespected Jelena Ostapenko what do you think would have happened to her? Let’s not forget this is the sport that if Serena Williams would have gave her Super Bowl performance in celebration for winning, she would have probably earned herself a fine from Wimbledon.
