A Georgia appeals court on Thursday disqualified Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis from overseeing the criminal election interference prosecution of President-elect Donald Trump and other defendants, who are accused of crimes related to their efforts to overturn Trump’s loss in Georgia’s 2020 election to President Joe Biden.
Back in March of 2024 Fulton County, Georgia DA Fani Willis was on trial to disqualify her and special prosecutor Nathan Wade because of an allegation made by Michael Roman, a longtime GOP operative and one of Trump’s co-defendants, that there was a romantic relationship between the pair and that Willis had improperly benefited from that relationship.
The appeal court stated:
“After carefully considering the trial court’s findings in its order, we conclude that it erred by failing to disqualify DA Willis and her office,” “The remedy crafted by the trial court to prevent an ongoing appearance of impropriety did nothing to address the appearance of impropriety that existed at times when DA Willis was exercising her broad pretrial discretion about who to prosecute and what charges to bring,”
The Georgia case is one of the two criminal cases pending against Trump. Judge, Juan Merchan, is still considering other arguments Trump’s lawyers have made for dismissing the case.
