The long awaited Kendrick Lamar Super Bowl Halftime show, with a song that was birthed from a beef, went down and fans were here for it, as he masterfully teased his smash hit diss track ‘Not Like Us’ before the beat finally dropped. There was so much controversy surrounding Kendrick Lamar performing ‘Not Like Us’ because of threats of a lawsuit, but the DAMN. Pulitzer Prize winning rapper symbolically made it all work. However, some didn’t like Kendrick Lamar’s performance because they just didn’t get it.
Well we found someone that was able to articulate what Kendrick Lamar culturally performed on national television.
- Samuel L. Jackson Dresses Up as Uncle Sam A major symbolic moment came with the appearance of Hollywood legend Samuel L. Jackson, who took the stage dressed as Uncle Sam.
- Super Bowl Halftime Dancers’ Symbolic Message The dancers, dressed in red, white and blue, created formations that resembled the American flag, with K-Dot standing in the middle symbolizing division.
- The Revolution Will Be Televised -Gil Scott-Heron’s 1971 piece, “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised,” has had a profound impact on hip-hop, with many artists referencing or sampling it in their music including King Kenny.
Kendrick Lamar isn’t a DAMN. Pulitzer Prize winning rapper for nothing.
