Family of Jayland Walker Will Receive A $4.8 Million Settlement

On June 27, 2022, in Akron, Ohio, Jayland Walker was killed when eight police officers fired 94 bullets at him after he allegedly shot at least one round out of his car window during what began as a traffic stop.

Jayland Walker‘s family accused the officers in the lawsuit of using excessive force and participating in a “culture of violence and racism” within Akron’s police department. A grand jury declined to indict the officers.  However a settlement has been reached and the family of Jayland Walker will receive $4.8 million.

The city’s settlement announcement explains that Walker’s family will receive $4,850,000 in four installments over the next four years. “We all agree: Akron should be a place where everyone is safe. We all know there are important problems to address in our community, and it is through our continued commitment, courage, and conversations that we will move our city forward together,”
