On Thursday, President Donald Trump hosted the White House’s reception honoring Black History Month. With a black celebrity cast in attendance, Donald Trump spoke about the Black figures to be featured in the new Garden of American Heroes, such as Kobe Bryant, Frederick Douglass, Booker T. Washington, Jackie Robinson, Martin Luther King Jr., and Muhammad Ali just to name a few. In celebration of Black History month President Trump created a job for, a woman who granted a second chance through the help of Kim Kardashian, Alice Johnson.
President Donald Trump has named Alice Johnson, a Tennessee woman whose life sentence for a non-violent drug offense he commuted in 2018, as his new clemency adviser, or “pardon czar.” Johnson, who received a full pardon in 2020, will now help Trump identify cases where pardons may be warranted.
“Alice was in prison for doing something that today probably wouldn’t even be prosecuted.” – Donald Trump
Alice Johnson prior to becoming incarcerated impressed the vice president of FedEx and was offered a job at the company, working her way up to a role in computer operations, and eventually customer support. She pushed for women and people of color to be treated equally, filing a grievance with HR that was well received by the top management and led to policy changes at the company. Who lost her job with FedEx when she gave the money she was advanced to her for a trip, to her boyfriend and she wasn’t able to repay it due to her gambling addiction. What landed her in prison was when she got involved in drug trafficking by taking on a role that involved passing along information on the phone between parties, then in 1997, Johnson was sentenced to life behind bars for her role in a drug operation.
