President Donald Trump is reportedly expected to direct federal agencies to pursue reclassifying marijuana from a Schedule I to a Schedule III drug, possibly as early as Monday, December 15, 2025.
Marijuana is currently a Schedule I drug under the federal Controlled Substances Act, a category for substances with no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse, alongside drugs like heroin and LSD. The proposed move would shift it to Schedule III, a category for drugs with an accepted medical use and a moderate to low potential for physical dependence.
Shares of cannabis companies jumped on Friday after the Washington Post reported U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to push the government to dramatically loosen federal restrictions on marijuana.
What exactly does this mean? All though marijuana has been legal in most states, it is still illegal because of how it’s classified at the federal level.
A White House spokesperson has stated that “no final decisions have been made”.
