We live in times where videos cameras are always rolling and microphones are always listening, so one would think that people would exercise emotional management as it pertains to their thoughts, meaning, not acting on, or speaking, every passing thought, particularly negative ones. But none the less we hear more and more about people letting their thoughts reverberate through their mouth which ultimately gets them in trouble. A professor at Hunter College in New York City has fallen victim to not heeding emotional management and has been placed on leave following racist remarks made during a public education meeting that were captured on a live microphone, in a Zoom like atmosphere.
Allyson Friedman, an associate professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, is on leave pending investigation following racist comments she made during a February 10 virtual meeting of Manhattan’s Community Education Council District 3, that left those in attendance in shock at the words that were coming out of Freidman’s mouth. During the meeting, which included a discussion about potential school closures, a Black student spoke in opposition to the plan. While attending the meeting as a parent, Allyson Friedman was heard speaking while unmuted.
“They’re just too dumb to know they’re in a bad school,” ….“Apparently, Martin Luther King, Jr. said it… If you train a Black person well enough, they’ll know to use the back. You don’t have to tell them anymore.”
In response to Friedmans inaccurate/false, perceived racist comments as a parent, the college from which she is employed confirmed that Friedman has been placed on leave pending the outcome of that investigation.
