César Chávez was an American labor leader and civil rights activist. Along with Dolores Huerta and Gilbert Padilla, he co-founded the National Farm Workers Association, which later merged with the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee to become the United Farm Workers labor union. César Chávez Day is observed in the United States on March 31 each year. It celebrates the birthday of César Chávez and it serves as a tribute to his commitment to social justice and respect for human dignity. Unfortunately just days before the celebration of César Chávez his day may be cancelled following Dolores Huerta accusing César Chávez of sexual abuse.
In the statement from Huerta issued by spokesman Erik Olvera, the 95-year-old activist said she was “manipulated and pressured into having sex with” Chavez in the 1960s when the two were at the forefront of the labor movement. Huerta and Chavez, two of the 20th century’s most significant California labor leaders, co-founded what would become United Farm Workers.
Huerta said in the statement.
“As a young mother in the 1960s, I experienced two separate sexual encounters with Cesar,” … “The first time I was manipulated and pressured into having sex with him, and I didn’t feel I could say no because he was someone that I admired, my boss and the leader of the movement I had already devoted years of my life to. The second time I was forced, against my will, and in an environment where I felt trapped.”
Dolores Huerta is alleging that both encounters resulted in pregnancies that she put in the care of other families. Huerta said she is coming forward now to share her experience following a New York Times multi-year investigation into Chavez’s sexual misconduct. Allegedly an investigation by The New York Times found extensive evidence that the United Farm Workers co-founder groomed and sexually abused girls who worked in the movement.
César Chávez passed away in 1993 at age 66.
