Adriana Smith, a nurse and mother of one, was nearly nine weeks pregnant in February when she complained of severe headaches. Northside Hospital gave Smith medicine and sent her home without running any scans. The next morning, Smith’s boyfriend found her gasping for air. A CT scan later revealed blood clots in her brain. She was declared brain dead and placed on life support. Doctors moved Smith to Emory Midtown to continue care until the fetus is viable, as Georgia’s heartbeat law prevents them from ending the pregnancy. Adriana Smith’s family has been by her side every day since, including her young son, who they said still believes his mother is just sleeping.
Adriana Smith gave birth on June 13, 2025 via an emergency c-section to a baby boy named Chance who was born prematurely weighing about 1 pound 13 ounces and is in NICU.
Originally the family of Adriana Smith was told, the baby has fluid on the brain and “may be blind, may not be able to walk, may not survive once he’s born.”
According to Adriana Smith’s mother, April Newkirk,
“He’s expected to be okay. He’s just fighting. We just want prayers for him. Just keep praying for him. He’s here now.”
April Newkirk can now sadly lay her daughter, Adriana Smith to rest, after giving birth and taken off of life support.
“It’s kind of hard, you know,” “It’s hard to process. I’m her mother. I shouldn’t be burying my daughter. My daughter should be the one burying me.”
