Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. is the oldest intercollegiate historically African American fraternity founded in 1906. Today Alpha Phi Alpha is sparking debates over there next historic move, to determine if transgender should be banned from their fraternity.
During Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Constitutional Convention in Chicago, to be held July 10-14. The proposed amendment, as reviewed by GLAAD, would limit membership to “any male defined as a human being naturally born male, who remains and continually identifies as a male.”
Some members of the organization say the proposed language is discriminatory, unnecessarily exclusionary, and politically motivated. They say the organization’s national leadership—and this amendment—don’t reflect a broader Alpha membership that can be more accepting and welcoming. However some on social media have pointed out that women are excluded from joining Alpha Phi Alpha so this move shouldn’t be all that big of a deal.
As Alpha Phi Alpha contemplates this significant change to its bylaws, the fraternity stands at a crossroads between its historic values and evolving norms of inclusivity and equality. There’s a lot of confusion around the proposed bylaw amendment, especially about how it would be enforced and who it would affect.
