TLC had a song titled ‘What About Your Friends’ that said What about your friends?, Will they stand their ground?, Will they let you down again?, Are they gonna be low down?, Will they ever be around?, Or will they turn their backs on you? Following the release of the Netflix docuseries ‘Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model’ it sounds like Tyra Banks answered ‘no’ to the TLC song questions, after founding A.N.T.M member, J. Alexander aka Miss J, revealed that he suffered a major stroke that left him speechless and unable to walk with no Tyra Banks to be found.
According to Tyra Banks herself in the docuseries she had a relationship with world extraordinaire runway coach, J. Alexander, since she was 17 years old. When Tyra came up with the idea of the reality show America’s Next Top Model, J. Alexander was one of the first people she taped to be on her team. According to Tyra Banks the network forced her to let her team/friends, Miss J, Jay Manuel and Nigel Barker go in 2012, where according to the series, the three amigos were embarrassingly publicly fired. Tyra Banks said she felt horrible about the network decision and doesn’t believe that her friends knew it was the networks decision and not hers.
The problem is, if you didn’t have an issue with your friends why when your friend is down following a life-altering medical emergency haven’t you shown up to lay eye’s on him or call??
Following being let go from America’s Next Top Model, J. Alexander continued appearing on international versions of America’s Next Top Model and helped other models with their walk. However, Miss J’s career came to a halt in December 2022 when he had a stroke. He was in a coma for five weeks and woke up unable to walk or talk. Miss J has since regained his speech but is still relearning how to walk, as of February 2026.
According to J. Alexander during his hospitalization, former ANTM colleagues Jay Manuel and Nigel Barker visited him, but Tyra Banks did not, but to be fair Miss J said Tyra did send a text saying that she wanted to come see him.
Based on the Netflix docuseries Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model, Tyra Banks wanted to participate in the project to address her show’s controversial legacy, break her silence, and contextualize her actions after years of criticism.
