4 Milwaukee Hotel Employees Charged With Felony Murder Of A Black Man [VIDEO]

D’vontaye Mitchell ran into the Hyatt Regency Milwaukee on June 30th, and entered a women’s bathroom. An employee dragged him outside and, with the three others, held him down on his stomach for eight or nine minutes while Mitchell gasped for breath, killing in a death that is being described much like George Floyd.   The county medical examiner determined that D’Vontaye Mitchell died of “restraint asphyxia” and noted that he might have lived had the employees allowed him to turn onto his side, according to the criminal complaint.

It is now being reported that Prosecutors have charged four Milwaukee hotel employees with felony murder in connection with D’Vontaye Mitchell’s death.  Charged were hotel security guard Todd Erickson; front desk worker Devin Johnson-Carson; bellhop Herbert Williamson; and security guard Brandon Turner. If convicted, they each would face up to 15 years and nine months in prison.

The wife of D’Vontaye Mitchell and her attorney shared surveillance footage Friday evening from the night the 43-year-old died outside of the Hyatt Regency hotel June 30 in downtown Milwaukee.

Attorney Ben Crump issued the following statement:

“The referral of felony murder charges in the tragic death of D’Vontaye Mitchell is a significant step toward justice. We are grateful for the referral of these charges, as they underscore the severity of the actions that led to D’Vontaye’s sudden and untimely death. We must now press for these charges to be formally filed by the District Attorney’s Office in order for these officers to truly be held accountable.

“While this development cannot undo the pain and loss experienced by D’Vontaye’s family, it is a crucial part of the process to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. Our fight is far from over, and we remain committed to D’Vontaye’s family in their pursuit of justice.”
