The legendary Dr. Funkenstein, George Clinton, is a singer, songwriter and producer who pioneered the funk genre, as the Prime Minister of Funk of legendary funk bands Parliament and Funkadelic (P-Funk), revolutionizing R&B in the 1970’s. All too many times we have heard the underground stories of alleged bad contracts and people in the music industry not getting their proper coins for their hard work, not to mention their contribution to music history.
It’s being reported that the legendary funk master, 84 year old, George Clinton is suing Universal Music Group for allegedly withholding over $1.1 million in royalty payments.
Reportedly in a complaint filed Friday in Detroit’s federal court, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, George Clinton says UMG has been withholding 100% of his royalties for more than three years based on the company’s involvement in a separate case filed by the estate of a former bandmate. George Clinton alleges that he is owed the royalties under longstanding recording agreements covering music he recorded starting in 1969 and into at least the 1990s, including work issued through multiple catalogs now controlled by UMG.
