The Legendary Dawn Staley Honored With Her Own Statue In SC [Video]

We here about Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese bringing a brighter spotlight to the profession of women’s basketball.  However before Clark and Reese there was Dawn Staley the coach of South Carolina college women’s basketball team and if you didn’t know the road to the women’s NCAA championship does go through her.

The legendary/iconic Dawn Staley was honored recently with her own statue in Columbia, South Carolina.

The ceremony of the unveiling of a bronze likeness of the University of South Carolina basketball coach, Dawn Staley, was unveiled in downtown Columbia at the corner of Senate and Lincoln Street, capturing Staley atop a ladder, cutting down championship nets while wearing a Gamecock hat.   Dawn Staley likeliness was made possible by Statues for Equality a collaboration between the City of Columbia, Statues for Equality, and local donors to increase public monuments recognizing women’s contributions.

Dawn Staley during her four seasons in college at University of Virginia, she led her team to four NCAA tournaments, three Final Fours and one national championship game.  Then after graduating in 1994–1995,  Staley played professional basketball in France in Tarbes, Italy, Brazil, and Spain before joining the ABL and then the WNBA. Dawn Staley has led the South Carolina Gamecocks since 2008, guiding them to three national titles and seven Final Four appearances, unprecedented achievements for the program.
