In track and field during the Olympic’s races boil down to seconds to determine a winner. We are now learning that seconds is also a factor in gymnastics as United States gymnast Jordan Chiles must return her bronze medal that she won 5 days ago at the the Paris Olympics over 4 seconds.
Jordan Chiles’ coach, Cecile Landi, originally filed an appeal of Chiles’ score when she believed the judges failed to properly score Chiles’ degree of difficulty. upon review, the judges agreed and elevated Chiles’ score which moved her from fifth place to third. The Romanians cried foul. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) voided an on-floor appeal by Chiles’ coach that vaulted her to third, saying the appeal came 4 seconds beyond the 1-minute time limit for scoring inquiries. Meaning that Jordan Chiles must return the bronze medal.
Why did it take so long to figure that out? Why didn’t know right then and there the appeal was 4 seconds too late?
Now for the twist:
USA Gymnastics said Sunday that it has obtained new video evidence showing that Jordan Chiles’ coach, Cecile Landi, submitted the inquiry into her score in the women’s floor exercise final before the one-minute deadline − 47 seconds after her score was announced, to be exact.
Jordan Chiles did win a gold medal in the Paris Olympics for the team event.
