Jackie Robinson Stolen Statue Found Chopped and Burned [VIDEO]

Thieves stole a Jackie Robinson memorial statue from a youth baseball field this week, the suspects, according to a statement from the Wichita Police Department, vandalized and removed nearly all of the bronze statue in McAdams Park on Wednesday night.

The good news is the major league great Jackie Robinson’s statue has been found, the bad/sad news is it was found chopped up and burned.

The Wichita fire department received a call around 8:40 a.m. about a trash can on fire at Garvey Park in the southern part of the city and discovered what appeared to be pieces of the statue, according to police spokesperson Andrew Ford. At a news conference Tuesday, he described it as “not salvageable.”

The damages to Jackie Robinson’s bronze statue is estimated to be around $75,000.

The statue was built by artist John Parsons and donated to the community by League 42, a nonprofit named after Robinson’s number with the Brooklyn Dodgers, which aims to introduce baseball to the youth of Wichita.
